Harm Reduction for Substance Use

-
Are you interested in exploring your relationship to alcohol or drugs?
-
Are there aspects of your use that feel helpful and some you might like to change?
-
Have you felt shamed or misunderstood in 12 step or other abstinence only settings?

Harm Reduction therapy allows you to talk about your relationship to substances without judgment or an expectation around sobriety. Not everyone who uses drugs or alcohol is interested in abstinence, and traditionally this has been seen as the only path to health. In turn, many people have felt shame and stigma around their use and have had difficulty talking about drug or alcohol use in a helpful way.

In Harm Reduction therapy, we can explore the benefits of your use as well as aspects of your use that you might be interested in changing or that present a challenge. I have experience working with clients who engage with a range of substances, including alcohol, marijuana, meth and opiates. Common areas that clients explore in harm reduction therapy include strategies to use more safely, how to mediate the impact of use on relationships, job or mood, and how to reduce or change frequency of use.

You deserve support from someone who trusts that you can and do make thoughtful choices about your life, regardless of drug/alcohol use. I do not have an agenda or goal around your use: instead, I am excited to collaborate with you around YOUR goals.
